The ruling planet, Saturn, is what the Graha Maitri factor reads: the two sides’ rashi lords are compared on the classical friendship table, and a shared lord or a mutual friendship scores highest.

The rashi’s position matters separately. Bhakoot counts the distance between the two Moon signs, and the 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 pairs score nothing — a factor that depends only on where the two signs sit relative to each other, never on either one alone.

This is the Moon’s sign, not the Sun’s, and it is computed sidereally. It will often differ from the star sign you know from a newspaper column.
