The 27 nakshatras

The nakshatras are the lunar mansions the Moon passes through, each spanning 13°20′ of the zodiac. A birth nakshatra is decided by where the Moon actually stood at the moment of birth, which is why we compute it from a chart rather than ask for it.

Three of its attributes are what a South Indian match turns on: gana (temperament — Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa), nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya, where the same nadi on both sides is the classical veto), and yoni (the animal symbol, which is scored pairwise).
